Supportive housing and treatment: what is the difference?
A place to live and a place to receive treatment can serve different purposes. Compare what a provider actually offers, who delivers each service, and what remains your responsibility before choosing a setting.
What is the main difference?
Supportive housing centers on a home and practical support for daily life. Treatment centers on clinical services. A housing provider may help residents connect with outside providers without delivering that treatment itself.
Names such as “transitional living,” “supportive living” and “recovery residence” do not tell you the whole service model. Ask what happens at the residence, what happens elsewhere, and who is responsible for each part.
Compare the setting, not just the label

These are comparison prompts, not universal definitions or an assessment of someone’s needs. NAMI Florida’s housing guide describes a range of arrangements with different amounts of supervision and support. Discuss the individual’s needs with their current care team.
Turn broad descriptions into concrete answers
“Support is available”
Ask how to contact support, who responds, whether someone is physically present, and what the response can include. “24/7 support access” should not be read as a promise of 24-hour clinical staffing.
“Care coordination”
Ask who schedules appointments, who communicates with outside providers, what permissions are needed, and who arranges transportation. Keep each person’s responsibilities clear.
“Month to month”
Ask about the minimum stay, renewal terms and notice requirements. A flexible rental period does not by itself establish how long a placement is available.
“Everything included”
Request an itemized list. Housing, food, personal supplies, transportation and outside treatment can be separate budget items. Use the budget planner to compare the same categories across options.
