Share a home
A shared-living checklist for roommate conversations
Sharing a home involves small decisions that are easy to leave unspoken. Use this checklist to discuss everyday preferences with the people sharing your space, then check any unresolved policy questions with the residence.
House rules come first
Ask for the residence's current written expectations before making a plan about guests, shared spaces, quiet hours or personal belongings. A conversation between roommates does not change those rules. This worksheet is a discussion aid, not a lease, a contract or an Ocean Breeze policy document.
Private bedrooms can still be part of a shared living arrangement. Start by identifying what is actually shared: a bedroom, a bathroom, a living area or access to particular facilities. Do not assume the arrangements from a room label or a photograph.
Six conversations worth having
1. Sound, light and daily schedules
Compare usual rest, work and appointment times. Within the house rules, discuss where calls or television are least disruptive and what to do when schedules differ. A clear request such as “Could we use headphones for videos while someone is resting?” is easier to act on than “Be quieter.”
2. Personal belongings
Identify personal storage and ask before borrowing. Discuss which everyday items, if any, people are comfortable sharing. Permission to use one item does not mean permission to use everything in that space. Keep account passwords and private documents separate.
3. Shared facilities
Ask about the residence's arrangements for bathrooms, laundry and any kitchen access. Discuss practical timing and how to leave an area ready for the next person. Resolve access or equipment questions with the team before relying on an informal arrangement.
4. Tidying and supplies
Clarify which tasks belong to residents and which are handled by the residence. For any resident-shared task, make the action and timing specific. Confirm who provides supplies instead of assuming a roommate has agreed to buy them.
5. Visitors and privacy
Get the actual visitor policy from the residence. Within that policy, discuss notice and personal-space preferences. Ask before taking or sharing a photo of another resident or their belongings. Do not treat living together as an invitation to discuss someone else's personal history.
6. How to raise a concern
Decide how ordinary practical issues can be discussed and identify the residence contact for questions you cannot resolve. Ask what help is actually available. This guide does not promise mediation, a room change or a particular outcome.
A short conversation record
Print these prompts or copy them into your own notes. Record the practical arrangement everyone understands, without collecting private health information. Leave a question marked unresolved if it still needs the residence's answer.
- The shared-space topic
- For example: evening calls in a shared room.
- The house rule we checked
- Where is the current instruction, or whom do we need to ask?
- What each person needs
- Describe the practical need without guessing another person's reasons.
- The arrangement we will try
- What will each person do? Keep it consistent with the house rules.
- When we will revisit it
- Choose a time to check whether it works for everyone.
- A question for the residence
- Who will ask, and what answer is still needed?
Describe the issue, then make a specific request
Illustrative example: “The television was audible while I was trying to rest yesterday. Could we check the quiet-hours rule and agree how to handle different schedules?” Keep the conversation about an observable issue rather than labeling the other person.
If a conversation does not feel safe, do not use this worksheet as a reason to confront someone. Contact the appropriate residence support person; an immediate danger requires emergency help. Routine disagreements and safety concerns need different responses.
If you are still choosing a residence, use the provider comparison questions first. Once you know the arrangements, the everyday-skills worksheet can help turn a shared responsibility into a manageable routine.
