Independent living skills: an everyday planning checklist

Independent living involves everyday tasks such as organizing time, managing belongings, planning spending and getting to places. This checklist helps you choose something practical to work on. It is not a test of whether you qualify for housing or can live without help.

Choose one useful task

For each area below, note comfortable already, want to practice, want help or not relevant now. There is no total score and no requirement to do every task alone. Tools, reminders and agreed support can remain part of the plan.

These are original everyday-planning examples. They are not a clinical assessment or a description of Ocean Breeze's workshop curriculum. Choose tasks that fit your preferences, living arrangement and existing support. Bring care-specific questions to the appropriate professionals.

Six areas to think through

Keep track of the week

Put one real commitment in a calendar with its location, travel plan and anything to bring.

Ask yourself: What reminder would help, and who can help if the plan changes?

Organize everyday spending

Separate a recurring expense from a one-time purchase, then check when each payment is due.

Ask yourself: Which costs are known, and which still need a written quote?

Manage belongings and laundry

Choose a place for everyday essentials and work through a load of laundry using the item's care label and the machine instructions.

Ask yourself: Are supplies, machine access, timing or another part of the task unclear?

Plan food and household supplies

Check what is already available, make a short shopping list and confirm the residence's food storage and kitchen arrangements.

Ask yourself: What is provided, what is shared and what needs to be bought separately?

Plan a local journey

Look up the complete trip to one destination, including the return journey and a backup if it changes.

Ask yourself: Would a practice trip, a written route or another person's help be useful?

Share space and ask for help

Identify one shared-space expectation and the right person to ask when it is unclear.

Ask yourself: How would you describe the practical issue and the help you want?

Use the budget calculator for the numbers, the local trip guide for transport, and the shared-living checklist for a conversation about space and routines.

Your one-task practice worksheet

Print this guide or copy the prompts into your own notebook. Make the task specific enough to try, rather than writing a broad goal such as “be more independent.” You do not need to enter or send personal details here.

The everyday task I want to work on
What will I actually do?
The first small step
What can I start with, and when?
What I need before starting
Instructions, supplies, access, a reminder or an answer to a question.
The help I want
Who or what could help? Confirm that arrangement rather than assuming it.
What happened when I tried it
What worked? Which step needs a different approach or more support?
The next attempt
Keep, simplify or change the task, then choose a time to revisit it.

Worked example: planning laundry

Illustrative example: “I want to complete one load of everyday clothes. First I will check the machine instructions, when it is available and whether I need my own supplies. I will check the care labels and ask for help with any setting I do not understand. I will set a reminder to return when the cycle ends.”

Afterwards, review the actual obstacle. If supplies were missing, the next step is to organize supplies. If the instructions were unclear, ask for a demonstration. Completing the task with help is useful information; it does not make the effort a failure.

Discuss the plan with the right people

Ocean Breeze publishes skills-building workshops and support access as part of its residence information. Ask the team which current activities or support arrangements relate to a task you want to practice. This guide does not promise an individual teaching plan, a particular schedule or a result.

If a family member is helping, agree on the part you want them to play. Our family roles planner can help keep that arrangement clear. Revisit the worksheet when your priorities or circumstances change, rather than treating it as a fixed measure of your abilities.
